Television Goes to the Oscars

This week in television marks the return of the biggest awards show in Hollywood, the final episode of a true television classic and a massive fan effort to save another favorite. First, the awards show.

ABC will be pulling out all the stops as it broadcasts the 77th Annual Academy Awards on Sunday, February 27th. First time Master of Ceremonies Chris Rock ("Rush Hour") presides over the ceremonies.

Along with the Super Bowl, the Academy Awards remains one of the few "event" programs on television that can still attract upwards of 100 million worldwide viewers or more.

Some of this year's nominees got their start in television. These include "Million Dollar Baby" best director and best actor nominee Clint Eastwood ("Rawhide"), "Finding Neverland" best actor nominee Johnny Deep ("21 Jump Street") and "The Aviator" best actor nominee Leonardo DiCaprio ("Growing Pains").

Fans of Det. Andy Sipowicz have a case of the blues: After 12 years and several Emmy Awards, ABC TV's "NYPD Blue" marches off into television history. The series, created by Steven Bochco ("Hill Street Blues") airs its final first-run episode on Tuesday, March 1st.

The series broke new ground in presenting adult storylines, partial nudity and an occasional four letter words. It is probably fitting that the series bows out in an era when television networks are increasingly skittish about airing any programming that may offend a group of viewers and thus be fined by the FCC.

Dennis Franz has starred as Det. Sipowicz throughout the series incredible run. Cast members have come and gone, including Sipowicz's partners. These have included: David Caruso as John Kelly (season 1), Jimmy Smits as Bobby Simone (seasons 2-6), Rick Schroder as Danny Sorenson (seasons 6-8) and Mark-Paul Gosselaar (seasons 9-12) as John Clark.

Fans mount effort to save "Enterprise": Low ratings have done what countless alien invaders could not - destroy UPN's "Enterprise." After four seasons the fifth series in the "Star Trek" franchise is being cancelled. It will mark the first time in 18 years that there hasn't been some form of the "Star Trek" franchise on the air

ABC and CBS Unveil New Fall Schedules

This week we begin our annual three part look at the new programs slated for the six major broadcast networks this fall.

Two big trends are immediately evident for the upcoming season. 1) So-called reality shows are down from 21 series to 14 and 2) the success of Lost and Desperate Housewives helped fuel the return of scripted programming, many with a supernatural bent.

We start with the network that made the biggest improvement in the ratings, ABC. We conclude part one with a look at the fall schedule for the number one network in broadcast television - CBS.

Shows returning to ABC next season are: ABC Movie of the Week, According to Jim, Alias, The Bachelor, Boston Legal, Desperate Housewives, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, George Lopez, Grey's Anatomy, Hope & Faith, Jake in Progress, Lost, Monday Night Football, Prime Time Live, Rodney, Super Nanny, 20/20 and Wife Swap.

Coming to ABC this fall are:

Commander-in-Chief (one-hour drama, Tuesday, 9:00 p.m., ET) -- Mackenzie Allen has a lot on her plate... She has twin teenagers and a six-year-old at home, an ambitious husband at the office, and she is about to become the first female President of the United States.

Before that happens, however, Mackenzie, who serves as Vice President, has to decide whether or not to go against the dying wishes of the current President, who has asked her to step down and let someone "more appropriate" fill his shoes in the Oval Office. Not only does the President want her to resign, so does the entire party that elected her in the first place.

But when the moment of truth arrives, Mackenzie isn't willing to be a mere footnote in history. Instead of allowing her detractors to keep her down, she decides to trust her instincts and accept the most powerful job in the world.

Commander-in-Chief stars Academy Award®-winner Geena Davis and comes from Rod Lurie, acclaimed writer/director of the Oscar-nominated film, The Contender, and creator of the critically acclaimed ABC series, Line of Fire.

Freddie (half-hour comedy, Wednesday, 8:30 p.m., ET) -- Four women to every man are great odds when you're a single guy out on the town, but not ideal when it comes to your living situation. Freddie is a young, successful chef with his own restaurant, a stylish bachelor pad and a trust fund baby for a best friend. The world should be Freddie's oyster at this stage in life, but bachelorhood isn't working out exactly as he envisioned.

Super Bowl Is A Super TV Event

The Super Bowl has probably become the biggest annual "event" on television. Programs like "The A-Team" became a hit because they received huge audiences by debuting directly after a Super Bowl broadcast. Many of the top rated programs in television history are Super Bowls. There are also countless hours of pre-game programming, even from networks who wont' be broadcasting the game. It is quite an accomplishment when you consider that two networks broadcast the first Super Bowl and many fans got free tickets. (Believe it or not, many people thought the idea of a "Super Bowl" was a mistake. Back then, however, the NFL was not the dominant television sports franchise that it is today.) Last I heard, tickets for this upcoming game were going as high as $3,000 each.

Fox television will be broadcasting this year's Super Bowl between the defending Super Bowl Champion and AFC Champion New England Patriots and the NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles. The kick off is 6 p.m. EST.

Fox is pulling out all the stops. Their pre-game shows that starts at 7 a.m. EST and includes Tom Arnold, host of "The Best Damn Sports Show Period." Due to concerns from about FCC fines, however, the program will be referred to as "The Best Darn Sports Show Period." (Political correctness at Fox? Who'd a thunk it?)

The NFL took control of the Super Bowl halftime show after last year's "wardrobe malfunction" with Janet Jackson. Paul McCartney has been hired to provide the Super Bowl halftime entertainment this year. Don't expect any "wardrobe malfunctions" with him.

A television legend passes away: The word legend is often overstated but not when it comes to the King of Late Night, Johnny Carson. Carson hosted "The Tonight Show" from 1962 through 1992. He provided some of the best moments in all of television. He was also known for giving comedians their big break including David Brenner, Joan Rivers, Jay Leno and David Letterman. A thumbs up from Johnny after a routine meant that you were on your way.

I'm 42 years of age and Carson was on way too late for me to watch on a school night. Nonetheless, I would often turn the TV on very low in my room late at night so I could catch Carson and his monologues. It would be so good I'd often find myself watching the entire show

Watch Satellite TV On PC Without The Dish

Watching satellite TV on PC without a dish is a completely new concept to many people. This article would reveal how you can enjoy satellite TV without any messy satellite dish installation.

For those of us who live in remote parts of the world, we are used to watching satellite television using a dish. This dish basically acts like an antenna to receive/transmit signals to and from satellites, allowing us to watch satellite television. The set up of a satellite television can be laborious for folks who are not too techie. The installation involves getting the satellite dish erected outdoor and fixing a low-noise block converter (LNB) on the dish. A receiver or decoder is also required in order to complete the installation. If this set-up sounds very complicated to you, you would be glad to know that you can now watch satellite TV on PC, without any complex installation.

Here are the basic hardware and computer requirements before you can watch satellite TV on PC:

1. PCTV Card

Your computer can act as a satellite television, with the monitor functioning as the screen. However, you would need to first enable your PC to receive and interpret the satellite TV channel feed using what we call a PCTV card. This card can be installed internally on the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) slot which attaches peripheral devices like the PCTV card to the motherboard of your computer. External PCTV cards are attached to your PC via the USB port. In both cases, please take note that internet connection must be established. If you are using an external card, remember to make sure you have a USB port. Otherwise you may need to purchase an adapter.

2. Internet Connection

Broadband connection at speeds no lesser than 512Kbytes is preferred. I will explain why. The quality of your satellite TV would be clearer and transmission would be faster and smoother with high connection speeds.

3. Computer Configuration

In order to watch satellite TV on PC, your PC has to satisfy some minimum requirements like having a minimum RAM speed of 128Mbytes and the CPU must be at least a Pentium 3. Nowadays, most computers are able to fulfill these conditions so it should bother you too much.

4. Optional Computer Peripherals

There are other optional computer components that would enhance your viewing experience such as installing a top-grade graphics card and sound card. It would be perfect if you can get hold of a sub-woofer or even a theater system that is compatible with your computer.

This may be a good way to watch satellite TV on PC but it is definitely not the best nowadays. With technological advances at such break-neck speeds, we can now access to satellite TV on our PC using software. Read my blog to learn how you can watch satellite TV from any computer installed with this special proprietary software everyone is talking about.

Direct TV Uses the Best Hardware

Direct TV must be doing something right considering it has over 16 million subscribers and is the number one provider of Satellite TV in America and Latin America. Direct TV was actually the first Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) in the entire world in 1994. Direct TV has expanded their services to now offer digital satellite television, XM radio, broadband satellite internet, and high definition.

Direct TV has also been awarded by J.D. Power and Associates of excellent customer satisfaction ratings. The only cost to customers is their programming package because professional installation and standard equipment are free with the package.

Direct TV has much higher quality picture signals than cable. It also has as many as 5 times the number of channels your local cable company can offer. Direct TV has a multiple of orbiting satellites that relay one hundred percent digital signals to all America.

Not only does Direct TV offer free equipment which includes a home-attached compact dish antenna, fully integrated receiver, and a universal remote, and certified professional installation, Direct TV gives every new subscriber the new Personal Video Recorder (PVR).

A PVR is a must have for anyone with multiple people sharing a TV or with a busy lifestyle. Programs or movies can be recorded for viewing at another time, even while watching and recording another show. Your own PVR can record up to seventy hours of commercial free music, movies, and shows. Store personalized libraries for later.

The universal remote also features a pause, stop, and rewind button that allows you to pause live games or shows if you have an unexpected interruption.

Direct TV has a deal that offers packages of 155 to 250 choice channels. There are three packages to choose from including Total Choice, Total Choice Plus, and Total Choice Premier. There are also high definition packages available to those who want HDTV."

Is Traditional Cable and Satellite Television Going Out Of Style

Some consider it as something that is destined to happen while others won't even give it a fighting chance. As computers and technology evolve, more and more people are moving away from their television sets and spending their free time on computers. But, will the Internet ever be able to over-power cable and satellite television?

It all started with emails. When free email accounts were made available to the public, people could not get enough of it. To be honest, the majority of people are still engrossed with the email phenomenon, all the way to the point where they will stop watching television just to read or write an email.

Shortly after email came other Internet paradigms. Before you knew it, instant messaging programs, social networking websites, and an endless supply of online videos were reaching computers worldwide. With all of this entertainment at any online user's fingertips, what else could the Internet provide that could rival traditional cable and satellite entertainment?

What about this: instead of finding alterative streams of entertainment aside from television stations, why not put those television stations right on the Internet? This is exactly what is currently going on and is slowly gaining in popularity. The question is whether or not it will be as popular as other Internet phenomenon's?

As of now, people seem to like where Internet television is going. Take for example the online product at http://www.satellite-tv-for-your-pc.com. They offer to give you 3,000 different television and radio stations (including local, national and global channels) all for a one-time fee. No matter if you are into sports, news, movies, shopping, or anything else that you find visually entertaining, this company is willing to give it all to you without any recurring fees.

Many people have already jumped on the bandwagon to gain access to these Internet television stations through mediums like http://www.satellite-tv-for-your-pc.com, but is it enough to consider standard cable and satellite television a thing of the past? Most would probably say no, but others are pondering the impact online television stations will have. After all, it has been proven in numerous studies that people are spending a lot more time in front of their computers than they have in the past.

After all, the Internet television service is dramatically cheaper, there are no monthly or recurring fees, and you are able to get the same channels off of traditional cable and satellite television. But then again, cable and satellite providers have proven their value to people. Since the whole idea of Internet television stations is still pretty new, many people will continue to be skeptical about it until the technology has proven itself. In the end, the success of Internet television is in the eyes of the beholder.

How Will Satellite and Cable TV Adjust With TV Entertainment on the Web

It has been proven on numerous occasions; people are spending more time in front of their computer than they have in the past. With all of the available things one can do on the Internet, it is no surprise that people are watching less television. But as new innovations come out on the Web and people spend more time on their computers, how will cable and satellite TV providers get back their customer base?

Honestly, this dilemma is probably one of the last things on cable and satellite providers' minds. There are still a majority of people that watch television to the point where they are not willing to forfeit their cable or satellite package. But, whether or not cable and satellite companies have been paying attention, there is no denying the fact that more time is being spent in front of computers. This fact should be acknowledged, for it could become a very big problem down the road.

Some of the primary factors causing people to spend more time in front of their computers are such things as games, email, instant messaging, social networks, and even online videos. There is no doubt that the Internet is becoming more interactive with its users on a daily basis, and people are responding to this in a very positive manner. And now that television stations are starting to appear on the Internet, people can start doing the things they love doing on the Internet while simultaneously watching their favorite tv channels.

Internet television is already starting to make an impression. As more and more tv stations put their channel(s) on the Internet, innovators are developing tools to fully acquire and collect these traditional television channels on the Web. It could be understood that the developers of this software package are definitely keeping track of television stations that make their debut on the Internet. With already 3,000 television and radio stations available, this is definitely one group that is bringing Internet television to a computer near you.

As you read this, you may be immediately turned off by the idea. After all, with traditional cable and satellite packages costing monthly fees, the idea of getting those same channels as well as additional ones on the web with new technology will probably cost a fortune. Believe it or not though, the power of the Internet has actually been able to eliminate those monthly fees. In fact, the developers at http://www.satellite-tv-for-your-pc.com only charge for the software; no other costs are incurred. Whether or not up and coming internet television solutions will do the same thing is debatable, but only having to currently pay a single fee for 3,000 television and radio stations is very appealing.

This brings us back to traditional cable and satellite television. If the internet tv boom becomes revolutionary to the television entertainment industry, will cable and satellite providers be able to take on the challenge? If they do, chances are they will either offer a lot more programming for the same price or simply just lower their monthly fees. Either way you look at it though, it will probably benefit the consumer, which is always a pleasant thing.

Dish Network Has Become A Leader With High Definition Programming

When Dish Network was founded back in the nineties it made a commitment to provide the best possible satellite television experience for it's customers. From the very beginning it's been living up to this goal by delivering the best values in programming using an all digital satellite signal. Since then it's only expanded it's programming options and been a leader in bringing new innovations to market.

A great example of an area where Dish Network has become a leader is with High Definition (HD) programming. With up to 29 High Definition Television channels available in four different entertainment packages, Dish Network has more High Definition Television program content than any other television service provider. Dishnetwork has also taken High Definition Programming to a new level. In the past, sports and movies were the obvious choices for High Definition content, but Dish Network has expanded the HD repertoire to include a variety of channels on other subjects. For example, Rush HD has taken the idea of sports in High Definition a step further with the introduction of extreme sports, Gallery HD provides coverage of visual arts and artists, and HD News has 24 hour coverage 7 days a week. Of course, Dish Network does offer it's share of High Definition movie channels to with Monsters HD, Kung Fu HD, and World Cinema HD.

Dish Network can also deliver when it comes to High Definition Television equipment. Dishnetwork Satellite TV currently offers two High Definition Television (HD) receivers. The ViP 211 is the entry level HD receiver which can handle just about any television resolution- HDTV and regular. It's intended for the single television household that doesn't need Digital Video Recording. Dishnetwork's ViP 622 DVR is the most advanced receiver available anywhere. It can send separate television signals to two separate TV's and it can record up to 200 hours of programming using it's Digital Video Recording capabilities.

Of course Dishnetwork still offers plenty of great regular programming too. For example, America's Top Entertainment Packages come in 60, 120, and 180 channels sizes and include plenty of great channels like Animal Planet, The History Channel, NASA, The Weather Channel, MTV, Encore Movie Channels, Spike TV, Home & Garden TV, ESPN and ESPN Classic, Galavision, Cartoon Network, TNT, The Science Channel, Do It Yourself. CNN, National Geographic, SoapNet, The Learning Channel, and many more.

Dish Network also has program packages available for people across the economic spectrum. Dish Family provides an economical way for the family on a budget to stay informed and entertained while America's Everything Pak provides 210 channels including movie packages from STARZ!, HBO, Showtime, and Cinemax.

Dishnetwork can also add local programming, Regional Sports Networks, and Seasonal Sports Subscriptions to your package. Seasonal Sports Subscriptions are a really great way to keep up with your favorite teams whether it's in baseball, hockey, basketball, or college sports. It doesn’t take great imagination to realize that online satellite TV dealers are running a much lower operation fees when compare to the bricks-and-mortal. With this, online dealers are capable to give out luxurious freebies (such as free satellite systems up to four rooms), free incentive gifts for first time customers (iPods, home theater systems, flight tickets), as well as free shipping and free professional installations for their customers. Their free satellite TV deals are so incredible that indeed these dealers are losing money upfront to win the market.

Picking up the right online dealers

We cannot deny that there might be scams and fraud deals in satellite TV online business. As a matter of facts, there are crooks that cheat money or often over-promise on their services. These cheaters might first promise fast installations, irresistible cheap price, as well as lots of expensive free gifts to lure customers; but once the deals are set and payment are done, what lies beneath the deal are extremely high cancellation fees, over priced installation and shipping fees, late installations, and poor customer supports

Satellite TV vs. Cable TV -- Which is Best

The move is on. Last year millions of Americans switched from cable TV to satellite TV.

Why? When you compare satellite TV to cable TV you'll discover the main reasons are cost, picture quality, program choices, and customer satisfaction.

Let's check out the differences ...

Cable vs. Satellite TV Fees

<> Cable TV fees across the country average $39.99 per month. In our area the cost for cable TV is $37.30 a month for 64 channels, plus $10.95 a month to add digital channels. Installation in one room is $39.95, plus $9.95 for each additional room.

<> Satellite TV fees from Dish Network are $31.99 per month for 60 channels, while DirecTV charges $41.99 per month for 115 channels. Both satellite TV providers currently offer free satellite TV equipment and free installation in up to four rooms.

Cable vs. Satellite TV Programming

<> Cable TV in most areas offers almost as many channels as satellite TV, and is broadcast in analog (over-the-air) format. If you want to have digital picture and sound you'll have to pay an additional fee, usually $10 to $15 a month.

Satellite TV offers more channels than cable TV (more than 250 channels), and more HDTV (high definition TV) programming. All satellite TV channels are broadcast in digital format for the highest quality picture and sound.

Cable vs. Satellite TV Equipment

<> With cable you only need cable boxes that connect the incoming cable line to your televisions. There is usually no charge or rental fees for cable boxes, however, If you want a digital video recorder, you'll have to pay an extra fee.

<> With satellite TV you need a satellite TV dish and TV receivers. Both Dish Network and DirecTV offer that equipment, plus installation, for free. Dish Network will give you a DVR (digital video recording) receiver or an HDTV receiver at no charge, while DirecTV charges $49.99 for DVR receivers and $299 for HDTV receivers.

Cable and Satellite TV Reliability and Customer Satisfaction

<> Cable TV outages average 3% to 5% per year. J.D. Powers and Associates ranks cable companies as good to poor in customer satisfaction.

<> Satellite TV outages average about 1%. J.D. Power and Associates has ranked the two satellite TV providers -- Dish Network and DirecTV -- higher in customer satisfaction than any of the cable TV companies for the last five years

The Bottom Line

If you only watch a couple of shows a week, and you live in an area where you can't get over-the-air TV and cable TV costs less than $20 per month, then cable may be your best option.

If, on the other hand, you want the biggest variety of shows, movies, sports, and news for the least amount of money ... you want to watch your all your shows in digital video and sound ... and you want the option of watching them in HD format and recording them on a DVR receiver, then satellite TV is what you're looking for.

Is Satellite TV The Right Choice - Choosing Between Satellite TV and Cable TV

There remains a longstanding debate between satellite TV and cable TV. If you're not sure whether to go with cable TV or satellite TV, this article will help you start to formulate a comparison of what each has to offer. This article will not attempt to tell you which is right for you. You should be able to determine that for yourself when you have a more clear understanding of satellite TV and cable TV. Some of the major topics of consideration are availability, picture and sound quality, programming choices and cost.

The direct competition between satellite TV and cable TV has brought many positive results for consumers of both. Satellite TV and cable TV companies have begun to offer more services and programming while cutting prices on equipment, installation and programming. It is important to note that with cable TV in particular, programming and price can vary by region so the final decision may come down to what you find out from your local cable TV providers. In some cases you may get a big discount from a local cable provider if you show them that you can get your desired programming you want for less via satellite TV.

Consensus is that satellite TV has more programming options than cable TV, though less local programming. Cable TV is often, but not always, cheaper. Installation can be costly for satellite TV or require a long contract for free installation.

If you live in a rural area, chances are good that cable is not even an available option to you. In that case you will have to find a satellite TV provider. If you live in an area without a direct line of sight to one of the satellites or without a convenient dish mounting location, it may be impossible to get satellite TV. If there is a possible workaround, the satellite TV provider may hit you with additional installation charges to make it possible to point the dish at the satellite

Digital Cable VS Satellite TV

Do you want to get more channels while saving money but not sure if you should go with digital cable or satellite TV? Then this article is meant directly for you! The commercials seen on TV and the ad’s displayed all over the internet can be overwhelming at best. Below we will hope to help make your choice simplified for you!

Cost Difference between Digital Cable VS Satellite TV:

Most cable companies include local franchise fees along with local broadcasting fees on your monthly bill. Digital cable varies starting at $30-$40 per month and up depending on the package you choose it can go up as high as $90 per month.

While Satellite packages usually offer betters deals based on how much money is spent per channel. Some satellite companies offer a price point between of $25 for over fifty channels. With most satellite companies pricing may be a little higher per month unless committing to twelve months of programming up front. A twelve month satellite commitment will usually ensure lower cost up front and most even free installation of the satellite dish.

Programming differences between Digital Cable VS Satellite TV:

Most Satellite TV systems can support over 250 channels of programming. All channels are of digital quality. One downside is satellite offers less local channels and may not have local channels in some areas. Most satellite companies also offer HD TV services that are compatible to your satellite TV service.

Digital cable on the other hand can support over 300 channels of programming of digital quality. Digital Cable has more local channels available in most major cities. Most cable companies now offer Video on Demand (a library of movies and TV shows that you can order at your leisure). HDTV services are becoming more popular amongst cable companies now and not just thru satellite TV as in the past.

Difference of Equipment:

Satellite equipment typically includes a satellite dish that is installed outside the home that is visible to everyone. A satellite receiver is also essential per TV. Most satellite receivers today also come with a PVR (Personal Video Recorder) which the cable company has not yet been able to offer as of now. Most satellite companies run specials on free installation and equipment when you agree to a 12 month contract.

Digital cable also requires one receiver per TV but that is all the equipment needed. Should you disconnect your service the receivers will be turned into the cable company where as with Satellite TV you own the dish.

In closing:

In the end the prices are comparable but it depends on which system will best suit your television needs and what you are more comfortable with. Both Digital TV and Satellite TV both have their disadvantages and advantages, you make the call!

Appointment Television is Back, As Are the NFL Playoffs

Television has a little something for everybody this month. The NFL is right in the midst of their playoffs for the Super Bowl, a "re-imagined" cult classic from the 1970s returns with new episodes, as do two of the best spy dramas in the history of television. First, the NFL playoffs.

Ratings are huge for playoff games. Both FOX and CBS will be pulling out all the stops, including using extra cameras and their top announcing crews. Here are the game schedules. All times are Pacific Standard Time. Consult your local listings for the exact times in your area.

Television gives fans a chance to catch Major League Baseball

Major League Baseball is probably best suited to radio and the likes of legendary broadcasters such as Vin Scully and the late Mel Allen and Red Barber. Even so, baseball is great on television as well.

Nowadays, the choices for a baseball fan are practically endless. Most local teams have deals with regular broadcast stations. MLB also have deals with ESPN and FOX so almost any game featuring a local team is on television, be it home or away. You can also subscribe to MLBTV and watch games over the Internet.

I have a bad case of baseball fever this season so, for the first time ever, I purchased the MLB package from DirecTV. While there are local blackout rules, I can get up to 60 games per week featuring each team in the league. Last night, for example, I switched over the Padres vs. Pirates extra-inning game once the Dodger game had ended. Quite a change from the days when I was a kid and seeing games on TV was a rarity - this was in the days before cable and satellite TV, of course

NBC Tries to Climb Out of Ratings Slump

This week we examine the new fall schedule for NBC. The Peacock Network fell from number one to number four in the ratings this season due in large part to the departure of "Friends" and the fact that none of their new series in fall 2004 caught on big with audiences.

Editor's Note: Show descriptions come directly from the network press releases.

Shows returning to NBC this fall include: The Apprentice, The Biggest Loser, Crossing Jordan, Dateline (Friday and Sunday), ER, Joey, Las Vegas, Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Medium and The Office.

"MY NAME IS EARL" --Earl (Jason Lee, "Almost Famous") has taken one too many wrong turns on the highway of life. A bully and a low-rent crook, Earl wins a lottery and after an epiphany, he is determined to turn his good fortune into a life-changing event as he sets out to right all the wrongs from his past. Despite his seemingly limited intelligence, he is oddly effective -- and ultimately, the comedy series, like Earl himself, has a voice and style all its own.

"FOUR KINGS" - An exploration of four lifelong friends on the cusp of adulthood: Barry (Seth Green, the "Austin Powers" franchise), Bobby (Shane McRae, "One Life to Live"), Ben (Josh Cooke, "Committed") and Jason (Todd Grinnell, "The Dangling Conversation") couldn't imagine life without one another. Since childhood, these bosom buddies haven't spent so much as a birthday apart, but when Ben's grandmother, who dubbed them the "Four Kings of New York," passes away, Ben inherits her apartment and decides to share it with his lifelong friends. But despite the comfort of their posh new surroundings and efforts to cling to their youth, adulthood begins drawing these Four Kings knee-deep into situations that aren't always easy to escape in this honest exploration of life-term friendship.

"THICK AND THIN" - A comedy about Mary (Jessica Capshaw, "The Practice"), a formerly fat woman who embarks on a new journey as a fit and newly single woman. That's easier said than done, however, when Mary's family and friends still see her as her former self. They include her overweight mother (multiple Emmy winner Sharon Gless, "Cagney and Lacey"), her overweight younger sister (newcomer Amy Halloran), her father (Martin Mull, "Roseanne"), and her weight-loss program buddy (Mel Rodriguez, "Panic Room"). But it is at the pool-and-spa company franchise she owns in suburban Florida that she finds her most unlikely confidant, her brother-in-law (Chris Parnell, NBC's "Saturday Night Live"), the company's "leotard-ed" spokesperson named "Captain Chlorine." When a cringe-worthy misstep lands her in bed with her ex, she realizes that getting thin was less about pleasing others -- and more about being comfortable in her own skin

New Series, Major News Events, Dominate TV

This week is a particularly eventful week for television. Sunday, Sept. 11th is the fourth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on America. All the major networks plan coverage marking the event.

The major networks will also be continuing with their coverage of the rebuilding efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Many of the news organizations provided outstanding coverage of the tragic events in the Gulf Coast these past two weeks. Some members of the media grew a spine and actually confronted various government officials with hard questioning when they gave incorrect information during their press conferences. The media should be doing this all the time, not just during a natural disaster

How To: Do A Television Interview

Acing a television interview may look easy enough, but there’s more to it than overcoming on-air jitters. No one waltzes onto a TV set unprepared. Everyone -- including the guest -- has to put in a little elbow grease before the cameras roll to avoid looking like an idiot on television. The good news is that unless you’re Tom Cruise, you can look and sound great without a publicist or handler. To nail your own interview, keep these tips in mind.

Ask questions

This isn’t the time to be humble. You need to look out for yourself even if you’re grateful to share the limelight. Ask the producer or interviewer for as much information as possible.

Generally, it’s a good idea to ask for the date, time and estimated length of your interview, a list of topics, some sample questions, whether there will be other guests at the same time, and whether you can visit the set or location of the interview beforehand.

Provide personal information

Always volunteer information about yourself; doing so can influence the direction of the interview in your favor. At the very least, you should confirm the spelling of your name, title and company, provide background information about yourself, and submit questions you would like to address.

Be prepared

Think like G.I. Joe because knowing really is half the battle. You won’t get stumped on air if you research and prepare. Watch a few episodes of the show and pay attention to the format, as well as the interviewer’s style and tone. If you receive a list of sample questions, practice answering them. Don’t worry about formulating the “perfect” answer; just figure out what you really think. You can take notes, but don’t bring them to the interview. It’s a lot like high school exams: Everything will come back to you when you get there. Just remember to study.

Dress the part

In television, looking good is as important as sounding good. You want people to pay attention to what you’re saying, not what you’re wearing, so don’t get creative.

Watch the program to see what guests usually wear. If men wear suits, don a dark one. Choose a light, solid-colored shirt and a plain tie. Avoid bold patterns or loud colors across the board. There’s a reason the simplest attire is the choice of male news anchors around the world: It translates well on camera.

If suits aren’t the norm, choose a plain, button-down shirt. A dark sport coat is a good choice because it is slimming. Again, avoid anything that attracts attention, like a necklace, earrings or other accessories. This is one time you should tap a coworker or friend for a second opinion on your outfit.
